Former England and Arsenal striker Ian Wright revealed he "hated" Alan Shearer during their playing days, but he is proud to call him his friend now.

Wright also said Shearer's hunger to score goals on a weekly basis made the former Newcastle and Blackburn star a superior striker during his playing days

Shearer still holds the record as the all-time top Premier League scorer as he registered 260 goals during his time at Blackburn and Newcastle.

When the 56-year-old came across an old Shearer Newcastle shirt on his My Classic Football Shirts Warehouse Tour show, Wright, who scored 113 Premier League goals, said: "Proud to call him my friend now... but when we were playing I hated him - simply because of his hunger to score goals on a weekly basis.

"You come in and you've scored two, Shearer scores three. If you scored two, Shearer scored one. If you score three, Shearer scores two.

"So you never catch up with him. And we're talking about someone who had three years out of the game with real bad injuries and he's still got 260. He's still way out in front.

"I'm not sure really people realise the enormity of his achievement."
