Agüero sticks up for Messi.

"LEO WANTED TO PLAY, BUT HE COULDN'T".

Sergio Agüero, Lionel Messi's teammate for the Argentinian national team, has justified the Barcelona forward's no-show in the country's two recent friendlies in the US.

"Leo wanted to play. He always wants to play, but he couldn't", the Manchester City striker claimed.

"The side of his foot was swollen and he couldn't put his boots on", Agüero went on, echoing the explanations previously given by 'Albiceleste' boss Gerardo Martino.

"He's a bit annoyed because like me, he always wants to play. But, as 'El Tata' [Martino] said, the best option is to not run any risks so that he can recover properly. There was no need to risk him", the former Atlético marksman added.

There is currently some concern at the Camp Nou over whether Messi will be fit to face Celta in Barcelona's next league fixture, on Sunday evening in Vigo.
