Amad Diallo’s double propelled Manchester United to a much-needed 2-0 win over PAOK, giving a boost to their Europa League campaign and energising the Old Trafford crowd.
Diallo’s performance was a breath of fresh air in a campaign that has often felt frustrating, as United struggle to find consistency in Europe. The victory, led by the 21-year-old winger’s sharp finishing, puts interim manager Ruud van Nistelrooy’s side back in contention, securing their first group-stage win after three consecutive draws.
Diallo broke the deadlock just five minutes into the second half, connecting with a Bruno Fernandes cross to guide a looping header into the far corner. Diallo’s first goal brought Old Trafford to life, with the home side now finally looking more determined after a lacklustre first half.
His second goal, an impressive solo effort, came in the 77th minute as he shrugged off PAOK defender Abdul Rahman Baba, dribbled to the edge of the box, and curled a shot that took a slight deflection before nestling into the net. Diallo’s clinical display highlighted his goal-scoring instincts and willingness to step up when his team needed it most.
Though the match was largely uninspired apart from Diallo’s contributions, United’s defence held firm against the Greek champions. Goalkeeper Andre Onana made a crucial save to deny Mady Camara, and Tarik Tissoudali missed PAOK’s clearest chance, firing wide from close range. Although solid, United’s defence still showed areas needing improvement – a task incoming manager Ruben Amorim will soon face head-on.
With Amorim set to take over, this win creates an important opportunity to climb the standings and potentially secure a direct path into the last 16 by finishing in the top eight. Up next, United face Bodo/Glimt, a match that will mark Amorim’s first home game in charge and another chance to solidify their position in the Europa League.
For now, Diallo’s heroics give fans hope that United can find consistency and maybe even an attacking spark under their new manager.
However, the search for dependable goal-scorers continues, as Rasmus Hojlund, despite his hard work, struggled to convert chances, particularly a missed first-half header that underscored United’s need for a more potent front line.
While Van Nistelrooy’s interim stint has been effective with two wins and a draw, the win against PAOK hints at the promise and the challenges Amorim will inherit.
Diallo’s brace might just be the start of a critical push for United as they aim to avoid the Europa League’s February play-offs, granting the new manager more precious time to build his squad’s rhythm and resilience for the season’s challenges ahead.
