Amorim Eyes Progress Over Pre-Season Silverware as United Regroup for Premier League Opener
Ruben Amorim heads back to Manchester with a trophy in hand and a checklist in mind. As Manchester United closed out their U.S. pre-season campaign by lifting the Premier League Summer Series title, the new head coach was far from content with silverware alone.
Luke Shaw Reflects on Toxic Culture at Man Utd, Backs Amorim’s No-Nonsense Overhaul.
For Amorim, the real value lies in the rhythm his players are building, and the sharp edge they’ve yet to find. A 2-2 draw with David Moyes' Everton in Atlanta sealed top spot for United, who finished the tour unbeaten and collected seven points from three matches.
The Reds edged past West Ham, Bournemouth, and the Toffees in the standings, with performances that hinted at promise but also left clear signs of ongoing transition.
While fans may see a polished group returning home, Amorim’s mind is already on what comes next. The focus now shifts to Old Trafford, where United will host Fiorentina in their final friendly on Saturday before opening the Premier League season against Arsenal on August 17.
Speaking after the final whistle in Atlanta, Amorim didn’t shy away from the reality of the team’s current level: “We are better,” he reflected as manutd.com reported, noting the progress made in the United States. “Even in this game, we created chances, and that is really important.” It’s a small but crucial victory in the early stages of a new era.
The Portuguese coach praised the energy and togetherness of the squad throughout the tour. With two weeks of uninterrupted work in a high-performance environment, Amorim believes his side gained more than fitness, they built momentum, something he’s eager to bring back to Carrington.
“The momentum of the tour was perfect,” he explained. “We are near to the start of the (2025-26) season, and we are going with the feeling that we need to do a lot of things.”
That sense of shared responsibility also extended to club captain Bruno Fernandes, who opened the scoring against Everton from the penalty spot.
Post-match, Fernandes commented on the need for more signings to reinforce the squad, a sentiment Amorim responded to with measured optimism. While open to additional transfers, the manager emphasised belief in the current group.
“Of course, one team can always improve with more players,” Amorim acknowledged, “but we have players to make that competition. We have the potential to improve with our players. I'm really happy with the squad.”
He welcomed the captain’s honesty, calling it a sign that the players recognise the demands at a club like Manchester United. “It is a good feeling,” Amorim added. “We are going to travel, have one day off and return to Carrington to work, understanding that at this club, everything is big ups and downs.”
The Summer Series win may have been a confidence booster, but Amorim is clearly playing the long game. With Serie A club Fiorentina up next and Arsenal waiting on the horizon, the foundation has been laid, but the structure is still under construction.
