The Arsenal boss Arsène Wenger has declared that he is trying to “transform” Abou Diaby into a more defensive player for Arsenal.
On Tuesday night, Diaby started his first game in 18 months for the Gunners as they lost 2-1 to Southampton in the third round of the Capital One Cup at the Emirates.
The 28-year old career has been affected by injuries in recent seasons but as of now he is returning to full fitness, and Arsène Wenger believes Diaby has the characteristics to play deep in midfield.
Wenger said: “I try to transform it [Diaby to be more defensive], yes because I feel because he was injured for a long time and he has the physical potential to win the challenges, to face the game will be easier for him than to play with his back to goal with the injuries he had.
“I tried to develop him in a deeper role, I think he can do it. He can be very interesting because he has all the attributes to do it.
“After, he must love it as well because he’s more of an offensive-minded player.”
