While the Emirates Stadium buzzed with anticipation, Arsenal and Liverpool delivered a gripping 2-2 draw in a Premier League showdown, as late drama and untimely injuries denied Arsenal what would have been a crucial win.
Mohamed Salah's 81st-minute equaliser cancelled out Mikel Merino’s first-half header, keeping both teams tightly packed near the top of the table.
Arsenal’s lively start paid off just nine minutes in, with Bukayo Saka outmanoeuvring Andy Robertson to score his 50th Premier League goal, firing past Liverpool keeper CaoimhÃn Kelleher at the near post.
The lead was short-lived, however, as Liverpool responded through captain Virgil van Dijk in the 18th minute. Van Dijk’s header from close range, assisted by a well-timed flick from Luis Diaz, brought Liverpool level after Trent Alexander-Arnold’s inviting cross.
Arsenal’s resilience shone just before halftime. Declan Rice’s precise free-kick found Merino, who delivered a powerful header to restore Arsenal’s advantage. Yet, Liverpool would not be kept down. After halftime adjustments by manager Arne Slot and forced defensive reshuffles by Arsenal due to injuries, Liverpool found momentum.
With William Saliba already missing due to suspension, Arsenal’s backline was further tested when Gabriel and Jurrien Timber were forced off with injuries. The defensive reshuffle provided Liverpool the space to push forward, and Alexander-Arnold’s vision set up Darwin Nunez, who selflessly squared the ball to Salah for an easy tap-in, tying the game at 2-2.
Despite Liverpool’s pressure in the closing minutes, Arsenal managed to hold on for a point. Mikel Arteta’s side showed grit, answering questions raised by last week’s loss to Bournemouth, but left the pitch disappointed not to secure the win.
Arsenal, now five points behind leaders Manchester City, will be hoping for swift recoveries for Gabriel and Timber as they continue their title chase. Meanwhile, Liverpool remain just one point behind City, with Slot’s measured approach keeping his side competitive in what promises to be an intense title race.
