Gyökeres: Arsenal’s 5-0 Win Shows “We’re on the Right Path”
Viktor Gyökeres announced himself in style at the Emirates, scoring twice in Arsenal’s commanding 5-0 victory over Leeds United. For the Swedish forward, it wasn’t only about the goals, it was about finding rhythm, growing into the system, and sending an early message about where this Arsenal side is heading.
Gyökeres spoke after the game with a calm assurance, but behind his words was a quiet determination to become a central figure for Mikel Arteta’s team. “Of course, I am really happy with the result. Of course, it was very nice to score two goals as well,” he told Sky Sports, reflecting on a performance that showcased his instinct and adaptability.
The striker acknowledged that the journey to peak form is still ongoing. A shorter pre-season meant fewer sessions to build sharpness, something he is working to address on the pitch.
“Of course, it was a short pre-season for me and not too many weeks training and then, of course, playing 90 minutes in pre-season. It was important for me to get 90 minutes and get the rhythm and to get to know the team even more during this game,” he explained.
That growing familiarity was clear in his movement against Leeds, where he thrived running into space and cutting inside with purpose.
“I felt more comfortable in how we're playing, and I think you can see that as well. I am comfortable when the ball is coming in-behind and then cutting inside. I know I'll take the chance when I have it like that,” he added.
For Gyökeres, the Arsenal attack is about collective quality as much as individual finishing. With players like Bukayo Saka, Martin Zubimendi, Eberechi Eze, and Martin Ødegaard around him, the opportunities will continue to arrive. “We have so many amazing players going forward. For me, it is important to be in the right place,” he noted.
The victory over Leeds continued Arsenal’s strong start to the campaign, with two wins, two clean sheets, and a flurry of goals. But Gyökeres was quick to stress that the hard work must continue.
“It is difficult. All the teams we play against want to challenge us. We have to prepare for every game as best as possible, but we have an amazing team, and we train well and work hard every day. We have started off well with two wins and two clean sheets and a lot of goals. I think we are on the right path, but we can always do better and improve.”
His brace may have provided the headline, but Gyökeres’ words revealed something more important - Arsenal’s new striker isn’t resting on early praise.
