In a fiery Madrid derby, Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid battled to a dramatic 1-1 draw at the Metropolitano Stadium, with Angel Correa's stoppage-time goal rescuing a point for Atletico.
The game, which saw play halted due to crowd disturbances, was filled with tension both on and off the pitch.
Los Blancos took the lead in the 64th minute through Eder Militao. The Brazilian defender capitalised on a deflected ball inside the box, striking past Atletico’s Jan Oblak after some chaos in the area. It looked like Militao’s goal would secure the win for Carlo Ancelotti's side, but the drama was far from over.
Shortly after Real’s goal, the match was suspended when Thibaut Courtois complained about objects being thrown onto the field by Rojiblancos supporters behind his goal. The referee halted play, sending both teams to the dressing rooms as officials attempted to calm the situation. Atletico manager Diego Simeone and several players addressed the crowd in an effort to restore order.
Following a 20-minute delay, the game resumed, and Atletico Madrid pushed hard for an equaliser. Their persistence paid off in stoppage time when substitute Angel Correa rounded Courtois and found the back of the net. Initially ruled offside, the goal was later awarded after a VAR review showed Correa was onside when the ball was played.
Real Madrid had chances to extend their lead, with Vinicius Jr. coming close, but Jan Oblak produced a crucial save to keep Atletico in the game. Meanwhile, Courtois made a fine save to deny Samuel Lino as Atletico searched for a goal.
The match ended with more drama as Marcos Llorente was sent off for a late challenge on Fran Garcia. His yellow card was upgraded to red after another VAR review, leaving Atletico to finish with 10 men.
After the match, Diego Simeone criticised Courtois for his provocative celebration of Real’s goal, suggesting it incited the home crowd. However, he also condemned the behavior of the fans who threw objects, calling for sanctions against those responsible. Carlo Ancelotti, on the other hand, supported the decision to suspend the match and emphasised that Real Madrid's point in such a heated atmosphere was valuable.
The result leaves both Madrid clubs unbeaten in La Liga, with Real Madrid extending their unbeaten league run to 40 matches. However, Barcelona now sit three points clear at the top of the table despite their 4-2 loss to Osasuna on Saturday.
