Following the signing of promising Italian full-back Matteo Darmian, Manchester United fans have been left somewhat speechless with the incredible signing of Bayern Munich midfield lynchpin Bastian Schweinsteiger.
German newspaper Bild were the first to announce the possible reality of the matter, now Manchester United stated that a deal worth to be around €20million has been agreed with the Bundesliga champions.
The signing of Schweinsteiger adds a sense of extra quality to the United midfield, leaving many pondering on what lies ahead. Could Bastian Schwiensteiger be the perfect signing for Manchester United?
Ever since the departure of midfield leader Roy Keane nine years ago, Manchester United have received criticism for a lack of steel, dynamism, and strong defensive protection in their midfield. Bastian Schweinsteiger however possesses all of these necessary qualities.
The German national team captain is a superb reader of the game, with his tactical awareness being second to none. These talents allowed Schweisnteiger to command Bayern’s midfield as they dominated German football, eventually winning the Champions League for a fifth time in 2013.
Schweinsteiger began his career as a Winger, but as everyone knows was eventually changed to a deep-lying ball winner, and what a tactical change it was. A good passer of the ball, Schweinsteiger has made many assists in his time. An eye for a forward pass, as well as admirable defensive contribution are the perfect combination and United need bolstering in both midfield areas.
Schweisnteiger has been one half of many great midfield partnerships, alongside the like of fellow German internationals Toni Kroos and Sami Khedira, as well as Javi Martinez. This track record shows that there is the possibility of Schweinsteiger forming a formidable midfield partnership at United, alongside Ander Herrera perhaps? Or even with fellow United transfer target Morgan Schneiderlin, who also offers competent defensive qualities.
The fact that Schweinsteiger will be re-united with Louis van Gaal is also a huge boost. German national team coach Jochaim Low insists that the midfielder understands the Dutchman, and that because of this he will shine at United.
Some fans are worrying over Schweinsteiger being possibly too old (Schweinsteiger is 31 years old). Well in my view, United would value the experience Bastian Schweinsteiger has to offer, having played at the highest level of European and International football. The World Cup final of last year is in fact a prime example of Schweinsteiger performing at his very best, with authority and defensive supremacy. The only troubling worry for me would be that Schweinsteiger is injury prone (he hasn’t played over 30 league game since 2010-11).
Regardless of this, €20million/£14million is a bargain, Schweinsteiger will offer respectable quality to the Manchester United setup, and the English Premier league.
