Brendan Rodgers says Lucas is important to Liverpool.

Brendan Rodgers insists midfield marshal Lucas, who has been linked with a move away from Anfield, is still part of his plans, despite not being able to guarantee the Brazilian enough playing time.

According to widespread reports, Turkish side Besiktas are looking to sign Lucas on a season-long loan, but while speaking after their goalless draw at the Emirates on Monday night, the Liverpool boss told Sky Sports: "Lucas is our best defensive midfield player.

"There are games where I play three midfield players but not always with a defensive specific one, but when we do need that, he is the best one we have.

"He is highly respected by me, the coaching staff and the players. But of course every player wants to play every game and every minute of every game but you can never guarantee that as a manager. He's certainly very important to what we want to do."

The Reds are third on the Premier League table after sealing two wins (Stoke 0-1 Liverpool. & Liverpool 1-0 Bournemouth) and a draw (Arsenal 0-0 Liverpool) in three games.
