Can Chile win the Copa America?

Chile have elevated themselves on the international stage in the last year to become of the best sides on the South American continent and possibly on the planet. They lighted up the World Cup in Brazil last year before been knocked by hosts Brazil.

The pressure was on to show if that quality was permanent when they were given the right to host the 2015 Copa America and have been one of the best sides in the tournament reaching the semi-final of the tournament after a 1-0 victory over current holders of the trophy.

With only one match between them and the final it is becoming a possibility that the host nation can go the whole way, so what are the chances of them winning the tournament? There are numerous factors that could see them lift that trophy on July 4.

Their obvious strong point is the quality of the players in their squad, they are the highest scorers so far in the five matches so far scoring an impressive 11 goals - six goals more than the nearest rivals Peru. They arguably have some of the best attacking players in the tournament with likes of Alexis Sanchez and Arturo Vidal to name just two.

Sanchez has had an excellent first season in the Premier League with Arsenal carrying the Gunners for some points throughout the campaign and was rewarded, winning the FA Cup and scoring 25 goals in the process. He may have only scored just the one goal so far in the tournament in the 2-0 victory over Bolivia but his contribution outside of the goals have been significant.

Despite controversy hanging over him throughout the tournament, Vidal has really shone, he is currently the tournament’s top scorer with three goals, the second Chilean player in the top five with Charles Aranguiz on two. There has been a media storm surrounding the Juventus midfielder as he was arrested on suspicion of drink-driving but he has rose above that to be one of the standout players.

It is not only in the attacking department that Chile are shining as they’re proving solid at the back conceding just three goals and Barcelona’s Claudio Bravo keeping the most clean sheets out of any goalkeepers currently at the tournament with three.

Another huge factor has been the astonishing support of their fans. The sheer passion of South American fans was put well on show last year at the tournament in Brazil and the home support for Jorge Sampaoli’s side is ten times that.

This support has managed to pull them through games that otherwise would be out of their reach and if they can continue that support it could lead them all the way to victory.
