Louis van Gaal and his team head to the St Mary's Stadium looking to clinch their fifth win in a row for the first time this season.
The Red Devils beat Stoke City on Tuesday and Carragher reflected on United's recent form as he told Sky Sports: "United are in great form in terms of results and obviously they’ve got injury problems as well so you’ve got to give them massive credit" said the Liverpool legend.
"When you look at the Arsenal game, people say they didn’t play to well to start with but to go the Emirates and get a win with the team they had out was fantastic.
"If you look at his record in the big games he’s done quite well. Obviously they drew with Chelsea, where they played well and got a decent result, they beat Arsenal and against City they were well in that game until they went down to 10 men so as I said they’ve had a lot of good results of late but it going to be a tough game now going away to Southampton.
Asked whether he was surprised about United's position in the Premier League table. He said: "A lot of money has been spent at Manchester United, even under David Moyes with the arrival of Juan Mata in January and then Van Gaal in the summer.
“There’s a lot of top players there so, considering they have had no European commitments, for them to be in the top four around Christmas would be the minimum you would expect."
Carragher reckons the Reds have an edge as they are not involved in the Champions League and feels Van Gaal has done a good job so far considering the amount of injuries that has hampered his team.
"They’ve got the advantage that Liverpool had last season in having no European football but on the other hand they have had a lot of injury problems so all in all I think Louis van Gaal has had a decent start.
"If United were any lower than where they are now I think there would be a few more questions asked."
