Chelsea need to improve their defensive record in their quest for a top-four finish, says centre-back Antonio Rudiger.
Antonio Rudiger has issued a rallying cry to his Chelsea teammates asking them to show 'more commitment in the defensive phase'.
The Germany international insists that Frank Lampard's Blues need to improve their defensive performance following their 1-0 defeat at St James' Park over the weekend.
The west London side have conceded more goals (30) than any other team in the Premier League's top seven, and Rudiger says they need to improve on that front in their quest for a top-four finish.
"It was the first time it's been really silent," the 26-year-old told the club's official website, regarding the mood in the Blues squad after their narrow loss to Newcastle on Saturday.
"Everyone was a bit down. It was an unfortunate game because we really tried everything but at the end we were sloppy.
"I have to take the blame myself for that. All of us who played in defence have to – at centre-back, right-back, left-back, it doesn’t matter.
"It’s not only on Kepa, it’s a collective thing, it’s the whole team. We need more commitment in the defensive phase and I feel like that was lacking a bit."
