Chilwell suffered anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) damage during Chelsea FC’s triumph against Juventus on the 23rd of November.
Chelsea left-back Ben Chilwell is set to miss the rest of the 2021-22 season because he needs knee surgery. The England international injured his anterior cruciate ligament in Chelsea’s 4-0 Champions League win over Serie A side Juventus in November and will now undergo major surgery on his knee, having previously hoped not to go under the knife. The former Leicester City star registered three goals and one assist in six Premier League games this season. An initial scan revealed Chilwell had sustained a partial ACL tear, and Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel said at the time that they’ll have a proper view of the situation in "the next six weeks".
A statement read on Chelsea FC’s official website: "After a knee injury in the match against Juventus the Chelsea medical department, in collaboration with their knee specialist, took the decision to attempt a conservative rehab approach.
"Unfortunately Ben was unable to progress and so collectively the decision has been taken to proceed this week with a surgical repair. "Chilwell suffered the injury in our home win against Juventus on 23 November. Including that game he had made 12 appearances this season, nine of them starts, and enjoyed a rich vein of scoring form in October with four goals in five games for club and country."
Chelsea signed the England full-back from Leicester for a fee in the region of £50m on a five-year deal back in 2017 and he has been a sensation since his move from the King Power stadium to Stamford Bridge.
