Chelsea boss Frank Lampard says he is aware of the devastating impact the coronavirus pandemic is having on football.

The former England midfielder says 'it's not a great situation, but we have to keep working.”

“I am certainly aware of that," Lampard told the media on Friday afternoon. "If you follow the news and the media and the country at the moment, it feels in a fragile state.

"We are understanding of that it is the new normal. It's not a great situation, but we have to keep working.”

According to reports, new signing Edouard Mendy won't be involved in Chelsea's Premier League clash against West Brom because he has not trained much this week.

However, Lampard says he will speak to Kepa Arrizabalaga and Willy Caballero following the arrival of Mendy from Ligue 1 side Rennes on Thursday.

“I haven't spoken to him [Kepa], but I will have a conversation with him and Caballero in 24 hours or so," said Lampard. "There is good competition between them.”

Thiago Silva and Ben Chilwell made their debuts for the west London club in their 6-0 EFL Cup win against Barnsley, but Lampard didn't confirm whether both defenders will retain their spots at the Hawthorns on Saturday.

“I believe they are fit enough to start but I have to take into consideration a quick turnaround on Tuesday and Saturday, then internationals," said the Blues boss Lampard said

"Thiago had 60 minutes in the tank, Ben I might be a little more cautious."
