Chelsea's James Reece: 'We got off to a good start.'

Updated: Sep 15, 2020

The Blues scored three goals in Premier League opener against Brighton.

Chelsea's Reece James was delighted he won the man-of-the-match award after Frank Lampard's Blues sealed a 3-1 win against Brighton on Monday night.

James scored Chelsea's second goal after Leandro Trossard's 54th-minute strike cancelled out Jorginho's opener from the penalty spot.

Defender Kurt Zouma's deflected shot in the 66th minute eventually clinched all three points for the west London club at the Amex stadium.

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live after the win over the Seagulls, the 20-year-old defender said: "Thank you, it was my first Premier League Man of the Match and my first Premier League goal and we got the three points so a good evening!"

On Chelsea's new signings: "They are great players and big names so good additions to the team. They will help us move forward.

"It's going to put pressure on everyone and make everybody lift their game. There's more competition in the team and better players so that will help us a lot.

"The aim in football is always to win. Luckily we got off to a good start so hopefully, we can keep on improving."

While speaking to Sky Sports, James said the competition for places 'makes everyone work harder'

"We knew it was going to be tough coming here and we knew we would have to put in everything to get the three points and I think we did that. We had to push up a gear," he said.

"As the games go on we are only going to get stronger. There are new players in the team so we have to gel and get stronger week by week.

"When you bring in high level players it brings the competition up and makes everyone work harder to get into the team."

Lampard added: "Reece James' goal, it had me off my seat and we needed it, we weren't at our best in that period. Reece has got that in him, he is a player of such quality. You try and get him in areas where he can be a threat.

"I thought we were OK. I liked the work ethic. If you analyse the fact that we've been together as a team for four days, to expect everything to click on day one is difficult. We showed determination and that is a game we might have dropped points in last year.

"I don't want to pin us down to one system. We have three or four players who want to play as a 10 for us but I want us to be adaptable. We have a lot of attacking players, I want us to be fluid, I want that movement.

"We weren't as fluid as we can be today but we will work on that."
