Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca has challenged Mykhailo Mudryk to become more consistent, comparing the winger's current form to "flipping a coin" and highlighting the need for better decision-making in the attacking third.
The 23-year-old Ukrainian played the entire match during Chelsea's 2-0 win over Servette on Thursday but missed a significant opportunity shortly after halftime and struggled to have a meaningful impact on the game.
Speaking about Mudryk, who was signed for a potential £88m fee from under Arsenal’s radar, Maresca emphasised the inconsistency in the player's performances since joining the club.
"This is Mudryk," Maresca said, referring to the player’s unpredictability. "He had some good moments and then some moments like flipping a coin. You don't know if it's one thing or the other."
Maresca acknowledged Mudryk's potential and expressed his commitment to helping the winger improve. "We are going to try to help him change," Maresca explained. "He needs to understand that we are going to give him the ball in the last third. And when he's there, [it's about] taking the right decision. For me, most of the mistakes from Misha are not about quality or technical mistakes - it's about the choice."
Maresca pointed out that Mudryk often makes the wrong decisions, either opting for unnecessary risks or missing opportunities to take on defenders one-on-one.
"Sometimes he tries to do something different and we lose the ball. Sometimes he has to go one-v-one. It's about decision-making," Maresca said. "Hopefully we can help him improve that."
Maresca remains optimistic about Mudryk's future, believing that greater consistency will allow the young talent to "take one step forward" and realise his full potential at Stamford Bridge.
