Everton drew 1-1 with the Tigers at Goodison Park and the Everton boss Roberto Martinez believes the two halves of the clash were very different.
The Merseyside club took the lead following Romelu Lukaku's strike as the Belgian striker found the net in the 34th minute. The Toffees were dominating most of the game in the first half but Sone Aluko cancelled out Everton's only goal of the night in the second half snatching a point for Steve Bruce's side.
The result wasn’t the kind Martinez would have enjoyed and the club’s official website reported the Everton boss saying: “The two halves were very different, you saw a Hull City side that came to make things difficult, to be disciplined defensively with two energetic banks of four, but I thought we were fantastic in the first half.
“I felt that we got through the lines really well, created a good tempo in our passing and we showed a real bravery that gave us a very good goal from open play. We had another really good opportunity after that and we showed real intent after we scored,” the Spaniard continued.
“In the second half it was really different. Leighton Baines comes off with a bleeding nose and we became unsettled in our rhythm. In the middle of that, Hull have one shot on target and they get the equaliser.
“After that we couldn’t find any energy. It is very difficult to be the way we are as a team and be creative without any energy. The longer the game went on the worse it was for us because we didn’t have the energy to be ourselves.”
It was the second time in four days the Toffee's have taken the lead and failed to score a second goal with Martinez hinting Muhamed Besic and Kevin Mirallas could have taken their chances and it would have been a different game entirely.
“We needed a two-goal lead because you know the opposition will come back,” Martinez explained. “They could get something out of very little.
“The crowd were frustrated at the end – you feel you have three points in the bag and all of a sudden you have one. So that’s a disappointment but the players showed character. We could have easily lost the game with the way it went.
“Overall I am really disappointed because the first half performance was good enough to win the football game. I don’t think my players deserved only one point after the opposition only had one shot on target.”
