Ex-Bayern midfielder Lothar Matthaus has levelled accusations against Spurs

Former Bayern Munich midfielder Lothar Matthaus has accused Tottenham of 'blackmailing' the club into paying a record fee for Harry Kane.

The Bundesliga champions eventually secured Kane's transfer for £100 million after complex negotiations. Kane, Tottenham's all-time top scorer since 2009, was allowed to leave as he approached the last year of his contract, with chairman Daniel Levy relenting.

Despite Kane's undeniable talent, ex-Inter Milan star Matthaus believes he was unfairly priced for his former club.

The 30-year-old scored a goal and registered an assist in his Bundesliga debut as Bayern thrashed Werder Bremen 4-0.

'Those in charge at Bayern were and are 100 per cent convinced of Harry Kane,' the German Icon told Sky90 as Mail Sport quoted. 'And that's why they stretched themselves, that's why they pushed their limits.

'And maybe Bayern has also - in quotation marks - been a little blackmailed by Tottenham. Another million more, and a little bit more. They wanted this player.

'And I say - 100 million for a 30-year-old - Lewandowski was three years older when he left and went to Barcelona for around €50 million (£42m) - I now assume it will pay off.'
