Frank Hails Spurs’ Bravery and Bergvall’s Breakthrough in 3-0 Win Over West Ham

Tottenham Hotspur Coach Thomas Frank Praises Brave Lilywhites After West Ham Triumph

Thomas Frank couldn't help but highlight the character of his Tottenham Hotspur side after they secured a convincing 3-0 victory at West Ham, and he also spoke about how vital his side’s football foundation has become in shaping performances this season.

At the London Stadium, Spurs’ dominance after the interval reflected both tactical clarity and aggression with the ball, elements Frank insists are at the core of their progress.

The first half had moments of balance, with West Ham threatening through deliveries into the box, but Tottenham soon grew sharper in their movement and intent.

Frank admitted the opening exchanges were competitive, yet he was quick to stress how his players wrestled control of the game as the minutes passed.

“It was a clear, deserved win. I think the first 20 minutes were more even. West Ham had a few crosses flashed across the box, but after that we dominated clearly,” he told Sky Sports.

Tottenham’s breakthrough came early in the second half, and it shaped the rest of the contest. Pape Matar Sarr escaped his marker inside the area to glance home from Xavi Simons’ inviting ball, sparking a period where Spurs dictated tempo and rhythm.

Frank was pleased with how that momentum was sustained. “I’m happy that we continued that in the second half. We scored a great first goal and an even better second goal,” he explained, underlining the importance of seizing control immediately after the restart.

The dismissal of Tomas Souček shortly after made West Ham’s task insurmountable. Within moments, Lucas Bergvall rose to meet Cristian Romero’s cross with a composed header to double the advantage.

For the 18-year-old, it was a milestone, and for his manager, a reason to celebrate his development. “He was really impressive. I’m so happy for him. His work rate, his energy, his enthusiasm, and then he scored a fantastic goal,” Frank said, pointing to Bergvall’s influence beyond his finish.

Spurs’ dominance was sealed when Micky van de Ven powered into the box and struck cleanly to add a third. It capped a display where West Ham’s resistance was sporadic and their numerical disadvantage proved costly.

Yet for Frank, the margin of victory was about more than finishing chances. “We’re focusing on set pieces. It’s an important area to be good at. You need to be important in all areas, and today we thought we had a chance there,” he reflected, underlining Tottenham’s attention to detail across phases of play.

The Dane reckons the win symbolised his blueprint, which is bravery with possession and aggression without it. “I felt we were brave and wanted to get on the ball. I thought we were aggressive, too. That’s the foundation to try and win a football match,” he said.

The win at the London stadium on Saturday evening held extra weight for Frank, as it secured back-to-back away league victories [following the triumph over City] early in his reign.

In doing so, he joined an exclusive list of Tottenham managers, Ossie Ardiles in 1993-94 and Tim Sherwood in 2013-14, who also opened their tenures with successive road successes.
