Bruno Fernandes Frustrated With How Man United Conceded An Early Goal From Set Piece
A frustrated Bruno Fernandes admitted his disappointment after Manchester United’s opening-day defeat to Arsenal, pointing directly to the early set-piece lapse that gifted the visitors their decisive goal at Old Trafford.
United fell behind inside the first quarter of an hour when Declan Rice’s corner caused chaos in the box and Riccardo Calafiori pounced. For Fernandes, the nature of the concession, rather than the result itself, was the source of irritation.
“We conceded a goal from a set piece early on, but from then on Arsenal didn’t create any chances,” the United captain told Sky Sports. “We created lots of chances and didn’t score so we have to do better next time. We controlled the game well, we were good on the ball.”
The Portugal international also voiced concerns over the treatment of goalkeeper Altay Bayindir, who was selected in place of the injured André Onana. “When you touch the goalkeeper and he can’t jump, that makes it difficult for Bayindir,” Fernandes explained.
“We know in the Premier League they don’t give much. Even if they had a meeting with us saying that they will whistle more if players block and don’t look at the ball, but it is more of a saying.”
United’s response to the setback was strong, with debutants Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo testing Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya on several occasions. Fernandes was encouraged by their contribution despite the lack of an end product.
“They created a lot, they were in the right positions. We know they are dangerous, and they are a threat. We are very aware of what they can give to the team. It was a good first impression for them, but I’m pretty sure they will do much better.”
Reflecting on the wider picture, Fernandes insisted United can take positives from their overall display and the backing of the home support. “We have a big hope for what we want to do and what we want to achieve.
“There are positive things to look at like scoring goals. I really liked the reaction of the fans at the end. I really appreciate what they did. That was more a sign of hope than what we did during the game.”
