Graeme Souness believes some of Liverpool players will wonder why Brendan Rodgers keeps picking Mario Balotelli to lead the line.
The Liverpool boss has put his faith in his summer signing Balotelli despite the Italian striker's lack of goals in the Premier League.
And Souness doesn’t believe Balotelli should be relied on to nick a win at the Bernabeu on Tuesday night.
“I don’t think Brendan Rodgers has enough good players to take them on. In the first match he tried to take them on in a game of football that suited Real Madrid down to the ground,” the Liverpool legend told Sky Sports.
“He is going to need a cautious gameplan in this game and make sure they defend properly – and then hopefully someone can nick a goal for them.
“Unfortunately, Liverpool don’t have that person right now and they also don’t seem to be able to defend and keep clean sheets.”
Souness continued: “Mario Balotelli is not my type of player and I don’t want to talk about him too much. Other people who are not in the team will be looking at him, as somebody who doesn’t bust a gut, and will ask why he is being continually picked?
“On the face of it, this is going to be a very hard game for Liverpool, especially when you factor in how easily Real Madrid won at Anfield. They will be full of confidence going into this game.”
