Guardiola Says Man City Will Bounce Back from First Loss of the Season
Pep Guardiola remains confident that Manchester City will recover quickly after a rare 2–0 defeat at home to Tottenham Hotspur, insisting that the setback is an early-season blip rather than a sign of deeper issues.
The Etihad Stadium witnessed a frustrating afternoon for the Cityzens, as Spurs executed a disciplined, high-pressure strategy under Thomas Frank. Despite several promising moments, City struggled to break through a resolute defensive block, with key chances for Omar Marmoush and Erling Haaland going begging.
Brennan Johnson and Joao Palhinha’s first-half strikes proved decisive, leaving Man City searching for answers as the visitors comfortably held their lead. Addressing the loss, Guardiola emphasised that the team’s effort and focus remained unquestionable.
“The game against Spurs this season involved a lot of build-up and man marking, similar to what we’ve seen against Brentford before,” he said as the club's official site quoted.
“You have to play differently. We missed simple things. I never asked them to do exceptional things. The effort to run was extraordinary, as it has been for many years.”
Guardiola was quick to place the result in perspective, framing it as part of the learning curve at this stage of the season. “It’s just the second game. Last game against Wolves, everyone said everything was fine, and I said it’s just one game.
“A lot is going to happen. I know how we are working and what the players are doing. There are many good things, but we have to improve. Step by step, we will improve and make more connections.”
The City manager also stressed the importance of bouncebackability and incremental growth. Despite the disappointment of ending an 11-match unbeaten league run, Guardiola’s message was clear - the squad possesses the quality, focus, and mentality to rebound and reclaim momentum as the season progresses.
