Guardiola congratulates United as they move closer to signing Maguire.
Pep Guardiola has revealed Manchester City could not afford Harry Maguire, and he congratulated Manchester United on sealing the defender’s services.
Maguire was initially linked with a move to City and Man United but the Premier League champions pulled out of the race to sign the England international as they couldn’t afford Leicester City’s asking price.
The centre-back has recently been seen leaving United's training ground as his world-record transfer looms.
After City's Community Shield win over Liverpool on Sunday evening, the Spaniard was asked if Maguire would turn United into title challengers, and he replied as skysports.com quoted: "Yeah. Maguire is an excellent, top-class player.
"We were interested, but we could not afford it. United afford it. He's an excellent player, national team too, he had an incredible World Cup.
"He's strong in the air, good with the ball, the build-up, he drives with the ball, he's fast, so fast. He has all the qualities. Congratulations to United for this signature."
City have won their first trophy of the new campaign with a penalty shoot-out win over Champions League holders Liverpool at Wembley.
