Guardiola Urges Focus Despite Man City’s Commanding 4-0 Win at Wolves

Pep Guardiola: Seeking Growth Despite Manchester City’s 4-0 Triumph at Wolves

Manchester City may have opened the new Premier League season with a commanding 4-0 victory at Wolves, but Pep Guardiola’s focus quickly shifted to what can be improved.

For the Spaniard, the performance provided both satisfaction and a reminder that the finer details will determine how the campaign unfolds.

Erling Haaland struck twice, while debutants Tijjani Reijnders and Rayan Cherki also found the net, ensuring City’s start was as ruthless as it was clinical. Yet Guardiola was not entirely content with the second-half display, where he felt his side lost some rhythm and control.

“We didn’t have the ball, we struggled to build up, and our pressing was a little bit flat, but it happens,” Guardiola admitted as City's website published. “It is completely normal, 90 minutes away at a team that is dynamic and physically strong.”

Despite the emphatic result, the City boss pinpointed Wolves’ threat as a reminder of the margins in Premier League football. “Before the third goal for Erling, they had a clear chance. When you are away in the Premier League and you concede one goal, you start to tremble. I liked it, but there are many things we have to do better.”

Guardiola praised the grit and adaptability of his players but underlined that the journey is just beginning. “Many players played really well. Half-time, come back, 0-2, and we were lucky that after four minutes there was an injury for Wolves and we controlled the tempo a little bit.”

Looking back to past seasons, he also made it clear that one result never defines the bigger picture. “Last season we were back when we won 2-0 at Chelsea, and look what happened afterwards. We won today. If you tell me we were back in the second half, I’d say no.”

For Guardiola, the Wolves win was a step in the right direction, but not a finished product. A blistering start on the scoreboard has only reinforced his desire to see City sharpen their control and consistency as tougher challenges await.
