Man City lost their first game since November 21 as Man United close the gap on their neighbours to 11 points

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola congratulated Manchester United for the 2-0 win at the Etihad, admitting his side were not clinical upfront and must return to winning ways.

City were stunned early in the Manchester Derby as United were awarded a penalty after just 34 seconds when Gabriel Jesus brought down Anthony Martial in the box.

And, Portuguese midfielder Bruno Fernandes finished off the spot-kick to give United a good start to the game.

United were incisive on the counter-attack when they did have the ball, but lots of their best work came when they were out of possession, with Man City finding it hard to hit the net.

Luke Shaw calmly doubled the lead a few minutes into the second half with a low shot.

Guardiola's side dominated the majority of the game, got chances through Phil Foden and Raheem Sterling but both players failed to convert as United held on and saw out the game.

The loss was Man City's first since November 21 and Guardiola told Sky Sports: "It was a fantastic game. United make incredibly high pressing and they are so fast on the counter. We played good. Unfortunately, we couldn't be clinical upfront so we congratulate United.

"We will be the news because we lost. But the news is 21 victories in a row. There are still 30 points to play and we have to start to win again.

"That's football. Sometimes it happens. We played much better than the game against West Ham which we won.

"It's always the same. We win a game and then move onto the next one. It's the same here. We lose this so we go to the next one. It's a lesson. Even at 0-2 we played really well."
