Jamie Carragher Slams Isak’s Price Tag Amid Liverpool Links

Updated: Aug 7

Jamie Carragher Questions Liverpool’s Transfer Logic in Isak Pursuit

Jamie Carragher has never been one to hold back his opinions, and this time, it’s Liverpool’s transfer dealings, particularly their pursuit of one of Newcastle's greatest Premier League strikers, Alexander Isak, that have drawn his criticism.

Speaking on The Overlap, the former Reds defender voiced his concerns about the eye-watering sums being floated around for the Magpies' talented frontman, questioning both the logic and long-term thinking behind such a move.

“If the figure being talked about is £150 million, I’d rather Liverpool walk away,” Carragher said candidly. “He’s a brilliant player, no doubt, but something doesn’t sit right when you’ve already spent heavily on another forward.”

Carragher was referring to Hugo Ekitike, Liverpool’s recent £79 million arrival from Eintracht Frankfurt. With Florian Wirtz also brought in for a record-breaking £116 million, the club's spending has surged beyond the £250 million mark this summer, an uncharacteristic approach under FSG’s usually measured transfer policy.

The shock twist came when Isak, reportedly unhappy after both Arsenal and Liverpool signed strikers, failed to report for pre-season training, sparking speculation that he’s pushing for an exit.

Liverpool responded with a £110 million bid, swiftly knocked back by Newcastle, who are holding out for significantly more. Carragher, however, isn’t convinced the situation is as clean-cut as it appears.

“It feels like this wasn’t planned,” he added. “You’ve signed Ekitike for a massive fee, and now you’re chasing Isak for even more? Either someone’s panicking or the plan’s been torn up.”

His comments reflect a wider unease among some fans. The idea of having two strikers with overlapping skill sets, and neither being a clear out-and-out wide player, raises questions about how Arne Slot intends to shape the attack.

While versatility can be an asset, it can also lead to square pegs in round holes, especially when both players are commanding starting-level fees.

Carragher also questioned the timing of Isak’s dissatisfaction, saying: “If he and his agent were serious about moving, why wait until now? It looks messy, and Liverpool don’t usually do messy.”
