Serie A club Atalanta scored twice in four minutes as they downed the Premier League champions in Europe's elite competition.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp admitted that his side "deserved" the loss to Atalanta in the Champions League on Wednesday night.

Klopp acknowledged it was a 'difficult game' as he bemoaned the fact his side will have to play Brighton in an early kick-off on Saturday, adding that it “is nearly a crime”.

The Merseyside club were thrashed 2-0 by the Serie A club, thanks to second-half goals from Josip Ilicic and Robin Gosens.

It was truly a disappointing game as Liverpool could only register one shot in the first half, their lowest in the opening 45 minutes of a competitive match at home since January 2017 when they hosted west London club Chelsea in the Premier League.

While discussing with BT Sport after the defeat at Anfield, the German said they’ll be ready to go again at the Amex Stadium: "It was not a good game. From both teams, didn't create a lot, until they scored the goals.

"A deserved defeat in a difficult game. The ref didn't whistle a lot and that makes it even more difficult, for both sides. It was unbelievably intense and you need some breaks.

"When the first half is gone, you usually settle but for some players who didn't play for a while it was very intense for them. We didn't find a way in the game.

"Easier to talk about a good game. We had moments but not real chances. It could happen to other teams. You ask us to go Saturday at 12:30, which is nearly a crime. That is nothing to do with the result, but congratulations to you.

"Thumbs up, no injuries and we go again."
