Liam Delap reveals what he thinks about when on the pitch
Two months into his Chelsea career, Liam Delap already looks like he belongs. The young striker hasn’t tiptoed into life at Stamford Bridge, rather, he’s sprinted into it, scoring goals, lifting trophies, and giving fans a glimpse of the relentless mindset that drives him.
His debut came with a bang during the Club World Cup, where he set up Enzo Fernández before scoring himself in a confident 3–0 win over ES Tunis. By the time Chelsea beat Paris Saint-Germain in the final, Delap was no longer the “new lad.” He was part of the celebration, medal in hand and grin plastered across his face.
Back home in West London, after a few weeks' rest, he picked up where he left off. Across friendlies against Bayer Leverkusen and AC Milan, Delap’s blend of physical strength, sharp runs, and ruthless finishing caught the eye.
At one point, he buried a penalty and then instinctively swept home a second, feeding off the noise from the Matthew Harding Stand. So what’s going through his head in those moments?
“When I’m on the pitch, scoring is the thing I’m thinking about,” Delap explained as Chelsea's official website quoted. “If I can walk off with goals, that’s always a good day.”
The 22-year-old admits his early weeks have been “quick and fast,” but credits his teammates for making the transition smooth. A close-knit Club World Cup campaign gave him time to connect, and the chemistry has carried over into pre-season.
Chelsea’s first league fixture is against Crystal Palace at Stamford Bridge, the kind of occasion Delap came to London for. He’s already formed a strong working relationship with fellow forward Joao Pedro, a rivalry he believes will keep standards high.
“We want to win everything we can,” he said. “That’s why I’m here - big games, big trophies. I’ve played a full season in this league before, I’ve learned a lot, and now it’s about bringing that to Chelsea and giving my best.”
