Atletico Madrid beat arch-rivals Real Madrid 4-2 on Wednesday night to lift the UEFA Super Cup, Los Blancos' first continental final defeat in 18 years and coach Julen Lopetegui said his side need to improve their defending.
Speaking after the defeat, Lopetegui said as marca reported: "The match started well for them and in the first play they scored, which we didn't expect, then the team managed to turn the game around, and for the most part we were better, but we couldn't take advantage of that fact and they made good use of all the chances they had.
"Then, in the first part of extra time we had control and created more chances. They took their chances. After their third goal we lost our style of play, but things like that happen.
"Football is good and bad days, you win or lose. In extra time we did well initially but the third goal hit us emotionally and we lost some order, and they then scored the fourth and that was it."
On Gareth Bale's display on the night, he said: "He played well, but it is normal at this time of the season that players aren't at their best physically. We are happy his performance and are sure will play well in the forthcoming matches."
And regarding what it was like to lose his first game, the Madrid coach replied: "I'm sad to have lost, and frustrated and it is normal to feel like that. Tomorrow we will have to wake up and prepare for the first LaLiga game and get off on the right foot."
