Louis van Gaal's first big test as Man Utd manager.

Today`s battle against Chelsea at Old Trafford will be Louis van Gaal`s real test as Manchester United manager since he was appointed in the summer. The Dutchman has not been involved in top clashes against big European clubs due to the absence of Champions League football at Old Trafford.

United have had shaky start to the season winning just three games out of their first eight opening fixtures which comes as a surprise as they have not played any of last season's top five in the Premier League yet.

All is about to change today with the clash against Chelsea, the Manchester derby at the Etihad next week and a visit to north London side Arsenal on the 22nd of November.

And in four weeks time, we'll know if the signs of improvement recently by Manchester United are authentic.

In as much as the Reds look better now than when the season started, it`s still not the Red Devils we`ve come to know over the last two decades under Sir Alex when the waves of aggressive attacks were coming at you again and again.

In Wayne Rooney`s absence, Van Gaal has got the players to win the game With the likes of Robin van Persie, Radamel Falcao, Juan Mata, Angel di Maria and Adnan Januzaj with Marouane Fellaini battling for a place in the starting XI after his goal and all-round display in the the second half at the Hawthorns

Today is the day I`ve been waiting for to see how good this United side are, as they face a Mourinho side who know how to soak up pressure and defend right.

Mourinho will be looking to exploit the spaces in Louis van Gaal`s midfield - if the Dutchman goes with a 4-4-2 diamond formation - and also weaknesses in defence. We all know United's defence is were the most issues are at the moment with injuries causing the chop and change at the back.

Mata can prove doubters wrong with a good display against his former side and manager who sold him in January. He`s a gifted player but hasn't been as consistent for Manchester United like he was at the West London club, were he won the player of the year award twice.

Anyway, I`m really waiting to see how the game goes, Mourinho wouldn't want to lose his first game of the campaign at Old Trafford and Louis van Gaal also will want to set the record straight with a win ahead of the Manchester derby at the Etihad next Sunday.
