Manchester City secured a thrilling 2-1 victory over a resilient Wolves side on Sunday afternoon. England centre-back John Stones delivered a dramatic stoppage-time winner that kept the reigning champions within striking distance of Premier League leaders Liverpool.
Wolves took an early lead just seven minutes in, as Jorgen Strand Larsen tapped in Nelson Semedo’s pinpoint cross, catching City off guard at the Molineux Stadium with an attendance of 31,319. Despite dominating possession, Pep Guardiola’s Cityzens struggled to break down Wolves’ determined defence.
City finally responded in the 33rd minute when Croatia defender Josko Gvardiol fired a long-range effort into the top corner to level the score.
The second half saw City ramp up the pressure, with Bernardo Silva and Ruben Dias both coming close to scoring, but Wolves goalkeeper Jose Sa kept them at bay with a series of key saves.
Wolves, while largely pinned back, occasionally threatened on the counter, with Matheus Cunha coming close to restoring their lead. As the clock ticked past 90 minutes, it seemed City would be forced to settle for a draw, but a last-gasp header from Stones, following Phil Foden’s corner, sent the visitors into celebration.
The goal was initially ruled out for offside but was overturned after a VAR review, breaking Wolves’ hearts and sealing a crucial three points for City. Wolves, despite their valiant effort, remain winless at the bottom of the table, while City’s victory keeps their title defence alive in a race that's just starting to build with Liverpool and Arsenal.
