Man City's Forward Potential Exit Sparks Pep Guardiola's Ambitious Transfer Plans

Updated: Sep 18, 2023

The Premier League champions Man City finds themselves at a crossroads as they contemplate the possibility of losing a star forward within the next 12 months. However, this potential departure could pave the way for Guardiola's side to embark on an exciting transfer journey.

Currently, The Cityzens' attacking roster includes the likes of Erling Haaland, Jack Grealish, Phil Foden, Alvarez, and Jermey Doku. Guardiola and the recruitment team have been engaged in discussions to bolster their squad further, with one standout talent emerging as the favourite. Yet, this pursuit may come at the cost of parting ways with one of their existing players.

According to reports from Spanish outlet Sport, Real Madrid have set their sights on acquiring Julian Alvarez within the next year. The move aims to bolster their forward line, which has been left depleted following the departure of Karim Benzema in June. Despite Alvarez's treble-winning season with Manchester City last year, there's a belief in Madrid that the Argentine World Cup winner may be enticed by the prospect of regular first-team action in the Spanish capital.

While Alvarez has started all four of City's Premier League games this season, his appearances were less frequent in the previous campaign, making a lucrative offer from Real Madrid potentially tempting. It's worth noting that Los Blancos had previously attempted to sign Alvarez when he played for River Plate, underscoring their longstanding interest in the talented forward.

Transfermarkt currently values Alvarez at just over £50 million, but given his age and contract until 2028, the actual transfer fee could be significantly higher.

If Alvarez were to depart, City could shift their attention to Brighton's rising star, Evan Ferguson, as his replacement. The 18-year-old striker has been making waves in the Premier League since his debut for the Seagulls last season, and his stock continues to rise with each match.

Securing Ferguson's services won't come cheap, with reports from Sky Sports suggesting a price tag of at least £120 million. Moreover, Brighton's owner, Paul Barber, has indicated that the Irish talent won't be allowed to leave until at least 2028.

Nonetheless, Pep Guardiola, known for his eye for talent, could spare no effort to bring Ferguson to the Etihad if Alvarez departs. The young Irishman has already found a place atop Guardiola's list of potential new signings, promising an exciting twist to Manchester City's ongoing transfer saga.
