Manuel Ugarte is set to undergo a medical in England today, completing the final steps of his transfer to Manchester United from Paris Saint-Germain.
The deal, worth £42 million with an additional £8.4 million in potential add-ons, marks a significant addition to United’s midfield options.
The agreement between the two clubs was reached last night after United’s Jason Wilcox travelled to Paris to finalise the negotiations. Wilcox, the director of football operations, was joined by Matt Hargreaves, United's director of player negotiations, to ensure the transfer progressed smoothly.
Ugarte’s move to Old Trafford has been made possible as United offloads Scott McTominay and Hannibal Mejbri. McTominay is nearing a £26 million transfer to Napoli and is expected to travel to Italy today to finalise his exit from United, where he has been since joining the youth academy at age five.
Meanwhile, Hannibal Mejbri is joining Burnley in a deal that could be worth up to £9.5 million. Mejbri has already undergone part of his medical.
Having not featured in PSG's first two Ligue 1 matches this season, Ugarte made his desire to join United clear, paving the way for the transfer. Once completed, Ugarte will soon become Erik ten Hag's fifth signing of the summer, following the arrivals of Joshua Zirkzee, defenders Matthijs de Ligt and Leny Yoro as well as full-back Noussair Mazraoui.
The 22-year-old midfielder made a notable impact at PSG last season, appearing in 37 matches and helping the club secure the Ligue 1 title and the Coupe de France. Before his time in France, Ugarte played 85 games over two years for Sporting CP and began his European career with Famalicão.
On the international stage, Ugarte has earned 22 caps for the Uruguayan national team, showcasing his talent and experience at a young age.
Ugarte's excitement about the move was evident when he took to social media app X, posting a simple eyes emoji, signalling his anticipation of joining the Premier League giants. With Ugarte's addition, Erik ten Hag is strengthening United’s midfield depth, aiming to bolster the squad for the challenges ahead.
