Alonso hails the Blues’ academy players who stepped in to help Chelsea’s depleted team at the Brentford Community Stadium.
Spanish full-back Marcos Alonso heaped praise his Chelsea teammates for their display against Brentford in the Carabao Cup. The Blues thrashed the Bees 2-0 on Wednesday night, thanks to an own goal from Pontus Jansson and a late Jorginho penalty kick at the Brentford Community Stadium. The win means Thomas Tuchel’s side will face Antonio Conte’s Spurs in the semi-final of the competition in January. However, Alonso, who was delighted with the victory, paid tribute to Chelsea’s three teenage Academy products that were handed their debuts on the day. Harvey Vale, Jude Soonsup-Bell, and Xavier Simons stepped in to help Chelsea’s depleted squad.
‘Everyone, even at 17- or 18-years-old played a great game, it’s credit to everyone,’ Alonso said as Chelsea’s official site quoted.
‘I think they were on holiday two days ago. They came for a couple of days of training and we saw the quality they have in this match. It is not easy to go here.
‘They have come to train with us sometimes. We see them and we follow them and I'm happy for them to make their debut. Hopefully, they keep improving.
‘It was a very good game for everyone. It is difficult at this time, with so many games and with Covid and everything, but there was an amazing atmosphere from the away fans parked in the corner, we had a very good performance and a good win and off to the next round.’
On Chelsea’s two-legged semi-final clash against Tottenham, Alonso said: ‘We are alive in every competition,’ he says, ‘and we go for it step by step one at a time. Let’s see.’
