The Germany international and World Cup winner had been expected to join Louis van Gaal's side, but Hummels has now changed his mind.
Mats Hummels will not be joining Manchester United this summer.
That was the message from Borussia Dortmund's sporting director Michael Zorke, who claimed the World Cup winner is very much part of the Bundesliga club's plans for next season.
United have been interested in bringing the defender to Old Trafford to some time and this latest news will come as a blow to Louis van Gaal's plans to revamp his squad.
Speaking to Kicker, Zorke said: "It made sense that Mats was thinking about his future, but I always pointed out that we plan [for the future] with him."
United are likely to turn their attentions elsewhere as Van Gaal looks to increase competition for places at centre back.
Marcos Rojo, Jonny Evans, Phil Jones, Paddy McNair, Tyler Blackett and Chris Smalling have all been used at centre back this season by the Dutch manager, but few have proven they are able to fill the hole left by Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic.
