Bryan Mbeumo’s transfer to Manchester United may have been a closely watched saga, but the winger has now revealed a surprising nudge that helped him warm to the idea of a move, a casual chat on holiday with Leny Yoro, who joined the Red Devils last summer.
The £65 million signing, speaking on Rio Ferdinand Presents, shared how a chance encounter with United’s rising defensive talent gave him a subtle push toward Old Trafford.
“I just met Leny on holiday,” Mbeumo said with a smile. “He already knew about the rumours and said it would be good if I came. I was like, yeah, I hope so too!”
That casual encouragement clearly stuck. Mbeumo, who netted 20 Premier League goals for Brentford last season, was one of the most sought-after forwards in Europe this summer, with Newcastle United and Spurs also in the race. But United acted decisively, giving Ruben Amorim another versatile weapon up front.
Settling in hasn’t been an issue either, thanks in part to familiar faces.

“I already knew Andre [Onana] and Leny, so that helped. It made my first few days much smoother,” he explained. “Once you join the summer tour, you’re with the team 24/7, it’s a great way to bond.”
While the spotlight has often been on the big-money deals and Amorim’s ambitious rebuild, Mbeumo’s smooth integration highlights the value of locker-room chemistry and peer influence in modern transfers.
A simple conversation in the sun might not make headlines, but for Mbeumo, it added a layer of comfort and a sense of belonging before he even pulled on the red shirt.
Now fully immersed in United’s pre-season tour, Mbeumo is already eyeing his impact, both on and off the pitch, with his eyes firmly set on helping the club return to the top of English football.
