Liverpool legend Gary McAllister is convinced the Reds can return to the Premier League top four "with the right additions".

Brendan Rodgers' side finished in sixth spot in the table, eight points behind arch rivals Manchester United and two points behind Tottenham - who finished in fourth and fifth place respectively.

The Reds have already started strengthening their side for the 2015-16 campaign - with the arrivals of Danny Ings, James Milner, Adam Bogdan and Joe Gomez.

And, McAllister has no doubt his former side will come strong this coming season, saying if the recruitment is right, Liverpool will secure a top-four spot.

"Other teams] will strengthen so that puts the pressure on Brendan to get back in there," the Liverpool legend told

"But you go back two seasons and Liverpool were inches away from actually being champions.

"So with the right additions I think Liverpool can get into that top four."

He is also delighted with the signing of Milner who will be joining Liverpool next month when his contract at the Etihad expires.

"I think it's a very good signing," said the Scot of the England midfielder.

"He's a quality player, he can play in three or four different positions and he's a very, very experienced international footballer.

"There is good experience within the Liverpool team but adding someone like Milner, who has played at World Cups, played at European Championships, he'll be able to go and cope with the atmosphere at Anfield. I think Anfield is a place he's really going to enjoy."

McAllister won major trophies - FA Cup, League Cup and UEFA Cup - during his heydays at Anfield.

Liverpool start their season at the Britannia Stadium were they lost 6-1 on the last day of last season.
