Barca president says Messi is important.
Barcelona CEO Oscar Grau recently suggested that a contract extension for Messi could stretch their finances.
Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu has quashed rumours suggesting Lionel Messi could leave the club.
Messi, whose current deal expires in 18 months time, is key to the LaLiga giants and there have been on going discussions with the Argentine and his family over an extension, according to Bartomeu.
However, speaking before Barcelona’s 5-0 triumph over Las Palmas, Bartomeu said: “Messi’s contract extension is essential for the club. I have had conversations with Messi’s family and people so that he can continue here. When there is news, I will let you know.”
A report on the Barcelona club website stated: “Bartomeu reiterated his view that the Barca number 10 ‘is the best player in the world and the best ever.’
“For the president, Messi is ‘indisputable’ in the project and the club ‘will do whatever it takes’ to reach an agreement as club and player ‘are looking for an understanding and it has to have a happy ending.’
“Bartomeu went on to assure that ‘there is no nervousness at the Club, only calm and people working responsibly.’”
