Samir Nasri says Pep Guardiola tried to persuade him to remain at the Etihad.
The France international left Manchester City on transfer deadline day to join La Liga side Sevilla on a season-long loan.
However, Nasri says his will for regular first-team football was a key factor in his decision to leave the Citizens.
He told L’Equipe: “He told me that I was a waste of a player, that I should not be playing there [at Sevilla] but rather at Barcelona. He wanted me to stay [at Manchester City] and play there.
“But I told him that he could not guarantee me a starting role and I needed to play. He told me that he thought that I was wrong, but in any case I would have two years left on my contract.”
