Pep Guardiola isn't happy with Man City star's situation.

Updated: Dec 25, 2022

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has expressed his disappointment at England midfielder Kalvin Phillips.

The Cityzens boss revealed that their summer signing Phillips returned to training from the World Cup "overweight".

The ex-Leeds midfielder wasn't part of the City side that beat Liverpool 3-2 to qualify for the Carabao Cup quarter-finals, and Guardiola revealed why the 27-year-old was omitted.

Guardiola said: "He is not injured. He arrived overweight. I don't know why, but he didn't arrive in the condition to do training sessions and to play.

"That's why he cannot play. When he will be ready, he will play, because we need him, we need him a lot."

When asked if he was disappointed with Phillips for not returning from the World Cup in the right shape, Guardiola answered: "It's a private conversation with Kalvin."

Phillips has played four times for City, coming off the bench in all of those games, and his last appearance for the Premier League champions was against Chelsea in the EFL Cup on the 9th of November.
