When it comes to identifying Manchester United’s transfer priorities, few voices resonate more than that of Rio Ferdinand.
And this week, the former Red Devils captain made it crystal clear where he thinks the club’s money should go - not into another inexperienced striker, but into Brighton’s powerful midfield engine, Carlos Baleba.
Speaking with his usual authority on his FIVE YouTube channel, Ferdinand didn’t mince his words. While RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Šeško continues to draw attention across Europe, including from Arsenal and Newcastle, one of the greatest Man Utd centre-backs of all-time, believes the Red Devils would be wiser to avoid the hype and instead invest in Premier League-proven talent.
“United need someone who’s been there, done it,” Ferdinand said, acknowledging the appeal of a player like Šeško but warning of the risks involved. “You’ve got [Rasmus] Højlund, you’ve got [Joshua] Zirkzee, you’ve got Chido, all young, all learning. At some point, you need a No. 9 with experience, someone to show them the way.”
But Ferdinand’s real excitement came when he switched focus from United’s struggling attack to the heart of the pitch, and one name dominated his thoughts.
“Carlos Baleba. That’s my man. I’m breaking the bank for him,” he said with conviction. Brighton fans won’t like to hear this, but Ferdinand isn’t looking at potential, he’s looking at proven Premier League muscle.
“He’s physical, tactically sharp, drives with the ball, has energy and legs, and he’s already got Premier League experience. He’s the kind of player Amorim would love.”
Still only 21, Baleba arrived at Brighton from Lille last summer in a deal worth £26 million and has since blossomed into one of the most exciting young midfielders in the league.
With 34 appearances under his belt for the Seagulls last season, he showcased a maturity and physicality well beyond his years, attributes Ferdinand thinks United desperately need.
“If I had to choose another unproven striker or Baleba? I’m going Baleba all day. He’s all-action, and he’ll change the dynamic of this squad completely,” Ferdinand explained. “He’s the kind of player who frees up others. You want to take defensive pressure off the likes of Bruno [Fernandes]? Baleba’s your guy.”
Ferdinand’s argument comes as United continue their midfield reshuffle, with veteran Casemiro nearing the end of his run and ongoing speculation surrounding Scott McTominay's future.
The club have already splashed over £130m this summer on Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo to add firepower up front, but Ferdinand warns that spending big on another raw forward would be a gamble.
“We’ve already got talent up top, we need balance elsewhere,” he concluded. “Baleba gives you that. He’s got the lot.”
As United continue their rebuild under Ruben Amorim, Ferdinand’s endorsement might just spark fresh momentum behind a Baleba pursuit. One thing’s for sure: in Rio’s eyes, the young Brighton midfielder isn’t just a good fit, he’s the perfect one.
