Lewandowski admits he agreed to Man Utd move before Dortmund stepped in

Robert Lewandowski has revealed how he once came within touching distance of playing for Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United, a move that could have rewritten both his career and Old Trafford’s history.

The Polish striker was at the height of his powers with Borussia Dortmund in 2012 when United came calling. For Lewandowski, the answer was clear.

“I said yes,” he told BBC Sport, recalling his excitement at the prospect of working under the legendary Scotsman. “I wanted to join Manchester United, to see Alex Ferguson.”

But Dortmund’s hierarchy had other ideas. Having watched their frontman fire goals at a relentless pace, they were unwilling to cash in. “They could not sell me,” Lewandowski admitted. “They knew if I stayed, they could earn more money, and that I could wait maybe one or two more years.”

It wasn’t the first time fate had intervened to keep Lewandowski from English football. Two years earlier, his much-publicised move to Blackburn Rovers was derailed when a volcanic eruption in Iceland grounded flights across Europe.

Robert Lewandowski thrived at Bayern before joining Barca.

While the Premier League dream never came to pass, the forward’s career has been nothing short of extraordinary. Lewandowski became a Champions League winner and serial Bundesliga champion with Bayern Munich, before conquering La Liga with Barcelona.

Now 36, he’s still scoring and still driven, but realistic about what lies ahead. “Maybe it could be a regret [not to play in the Premier League],” he admitted.

“But when I look back – Bayern, Dortmund, Barcelona – I’m happy with my career. I don’t feel I missed something, because every move or decision I made was what I wanted.”

In another reality, Lewandowski might have been Ferguson’s final marquee signing. Instead, he built his legend elsewhere, leaving fans to imagine what might have been at the Theatre of Dreams.

Robert Lewandowski won 2 league titles while at Dortmund.
