Romelu Lukaku was welcomed back into the Chelsea FC side after he apologised for his explosive interview a few weeks ago.

The Belgium striker made inappropriate comments about his role under manager Thomas Tuchel at Stamford Bridge, which upset many of the Blues fans and led him to being dropped for the Premier League draw with Liverpool.

However, former Blues defender William Gallas believes the only one way Lukaku can earn the forgiveness of the Chelsea supporters is by hitting the back of the net.

"I don’t think it was very clever for him to speak about Tuchel and his tactics." Gallas told Genting Casino, adding that "Players have to be very careful about what they say. There is so much media interest in absolutely everything."

"He has received his punishment and learned from it. The most important thing is how he responds.

"He has to be focussed and ready for his team. He needs to start scoring goals for Chelsea.

Gallas - who won two Premier League titles with Chelsea, continued: "The people at Chelsea will only forgive if he starts performing at the level we have come to expect from him. "Chelsea fans will not forget what he said unless he starts scoring goals and delivering match-winning performances. "When you’re [a top player] you have to adapt to any system and you have to score goals. That’s what is expected from you." The goal against Chesterfield in the FA Cup was Lukaku's eighth in all competitions so far this season and he will be keen on extending that feat when Chelsea play Manchester City at the Etihad today.
