When it comes to legendary Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson’s eye for talent, it turns out he once had his sights set on none other than Edgar Davids.
The ex-Dutch midfield dynamo recently revealed in an exclusive MUTV interview that Ferguson made a strong case to bring him to Old Trafford, but Davids had already made up his mind to head elsewhere.
A Conversation That Could Have Changed Football History
In 1996, while still at Ajax, Davids got the chance to chat with Ferguson. “It was one of the most incredible talks I ever had,” Davids said. He recalled being captivated by Ferguson’s commanding personality, describing it as “a whole different level.” Yet despite the allure of United, the midfielder was drawn to Italy, where he eventually joined AC Milan.
Admiration For A Red Devil Legend
Davids didn’t just admire Ferguson; he idolized Paul Ince, United’s combative midfielder at the time. “I already watched Manchester United as they had a player I really liked Paul Ince,” Davids explained. The two would later face off in a fierce Milan derby, a battle etched into his memory, pitting Ince against Marcel Desailly in a midfield showdown.
No Regrets, Just Different Dreams
Though Ferguson’s pitch was compelling, Davids made no bones about following his own path. “No regrets,” he said. “I only considered Italy for me because Italy was the place I wanted to be. The best players were playing in Italy at the time, like it is now in the Premier League.”
