United fell behind early in the game against the Baggies when Mbaye Diagne's close-range header went past goalkeeper David de Gea, and they found it difficult to break down West Brom, with Bruno Fernandes once again showing his class as he levelled the score.
Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was disappointed his boys failed to seal a win at The Hawthorns on Sunday.
The Red Devils failed to close the gap on Premier League leaders Manchester City as they played out a 1-1 draw with relegation battlers West Bromwich Albion.
Mbaye Diagne shocked the hosts early in the game when he headed home Conor Gallagher's cross past David de Gea after just two minutes.
The awayside struggled to find their way back into the game but eventually equalised at the stroke of half-time with an outstanding Bruno Fernandes strike.
Referee Craig Pawson then awarded United a penalty in the second half when Harry Maguire fell in the 18-yard box, but the decision was overturned after a review on the VAR monitor which was on the sidelines.
And despite United dominating the majority of the clash, it was West Brom that looked the more likely to register three points, as chances kept going their way late on.
Captain Maguire saw his header tipped onto the post by keeper Sam Johnstone seconds before the final whistle and both teams shared the spoils.
Following the draw, Solskjaer told BBC Sport: “I’m disappointed. We want to get three points on the board and challenge teams above us. We gave ourselves a difficult start going 1-0 down after a minute.”
When asked whether West Brom’s goal should have stood, the Norwegian replied: “As a striker, you’d like to get there. I think the boy does well to climb over Victor Lindelof. A month or two ago Harry Maguire was told his goal against Burnley was a foul. Where’s the consistency? I’m just asking for clarity. We see it flip-flopped around, many big decisions.
“The team talk is a little bit different [after United’s goal]. We couldn’t really build on that pressure. They created a few chances. It could easily have been a defeat.”
On United’s penalty being overturned by VAR, he said: “What’s the point of going over? It’s offside. If anyone is awake in the VAR room tell them it’s offside.”
“Good save by Sam Johnstone at the end. I know we thought that was the moment we were waiting for. You don’t do enough to win if you don’t get the finish or last pass off. Mason Greenwood flashed the ball across the goal, someone should be there. They call me a tap-in merchant. We should have been there.”
Quizzed about their title hopes, Solskjaer responded: “Let’s just build, win games, and put City under pressure. They’re in good form. Us and Leicester have to put up a fight.”
