For Tottenham Hotspur’s new Head Coach, Thomas Frank, one moment stood out like a flash of lightning in a summer sky, and it was a 40-yard strike in Hong Kong that sent the crowd roaring and reminded everyone why Pape Matar Sarr is one of the most exciting midfielders in the Premier League.
But the admiration runs deeper than a wonder goal. Sarr’s long-range stunner against Arsenal, curled with intelligence and executed with calm confidence, may have stolen headlines, but Frank sees more than viral brilliance.
He sees a player blooming in real time, week by week, session by session, into the midfield engine Spurs really need if they are to have a better Premier League campaign.
“It’s so far the goal of the season!” Frank told Tottenham Hotspur's official video streaming platform, 'SPURSPLAY,' following the 1-0 win over Arsenal at Kai Tak Stadium. “He took it so well and so quickly, saw David Raya was too far out of his goal and put it away.”
That moment, with the game tight and 50,000 fans on edge, revealed something else, which was composure under pressure. Sarr didn’t hesitate. He read the field like a chess master and executed the finish like a seasoned pro.
Still, for Frank, the most compelling part of Sarr’s game isn't his ability to score from the halfway line, it’s everything else. His work rate, positional maturity, and rhythm in midfield have stood out during the coach’s early days at Hotspur Way.
“I think Pape has been amazing,” Frank added. “I really like how he has played and performed in the last four weeks, training and in games. He’s building, and his all-round game today... top.”
