Spurs Boss Thomas Frank: Cristian Romero is Very Important For Us

Tottenham manager Thomas Frank has underlined the immense value Cristian Romero brings to his side, describing the Argentine defender as a cornerstone of Spurs’ future.

Romero, who penned a new long-term deal on Monday, has also been entrusted with the captain’s armband heading into the 2025/26 season.

Frank, speaking with clear enthusiasm, made no attempt to hide the relief of securing Romero’s commitment, having been linked with a move away to Atletico Madrid recently.

“Of course, extremely happy. He’s a very important player for us, just been named captain so that speaks for itself,” the Dane told Spurs' website. “For me, he’s one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League and, to have him locked down long-term, every fan, me, staff, should be extremely happy.”

The Spurs boss highlighted that Romero’s decision to stay reflects not only loyalty but also belief in the project being built in north London. “It shows he’s committed to the journey we’re on and the future and the bits we’re building together. Very happy,” he added.

Frank’s admiration for the 28-year-old is not new. He recalled being impressed with Romero during his time at Brentford, even before they linked up at Tottenham. Working alongside him in recent weeks has only reinforced that opinion.

“I always thought he was one of the better centre-backs. Then you realise, when you get to work with him closely, his strength, his development areas, and also the person behind the player,” Frank explained.

Romero’s attributes on the pitch were laid out in glowing terms. According to Frank, the centre-back’s blend of composure, precise distribution, and aggressive defending sets him apart. His knack for dominating duels and being a threat at set pieces only adds to his all-around importance.

Naming Romero captain, Frank believes, was not only deserved but a natural next step. “He will thrive under this captaincy.

No doubt it was something he was hoping to be and wanted to be. When you have that approach, normally people take another step up and really want to go to the next level in terms of leadership,” Frank said.

Acknowledging Romero’s relative youth as a leader, Frank was confident his skipper would grow quickly into the role. “There’s more responsibility, and we also need to remember he’s a young leader, so he will learn and be even better,” he concluded.
