Back-to-Back Clean Sheets Made Spurs Boss Thomas Frank Happy

Thomas Frank beamed with satisfaction after Tottenham Hotspur claimed a 2–0 triumph at Manchester City, marking consecutive clean sheets to open their 2025-26 Premier League campaign.

For the Spurs manager, the result represented more than just victory, it was evidence of a defensive blueprint beginning to click under his guidance, unlike last term under when Ange Postecoglou.

Reflecting on the Etihad showdown, Frank praised his side’s discipline and mental strength. “I’m extremely proud of the players’ performance,” he said. “It was an exceptionally good display.

“The first 35 minutes were fairly even, with City pressing strongly, but we stayed in the game, scored a great goal, and that shifted the momentum. From there, we maintained control and went 2–0 up.”

Frank was particularly satisfied with how Spurs managed City’s second-half pressure. “During that spell when you expect them to dominate, we were very aggressive with high pressing. We stayed front-footed, always looking for a third goal. That mindset, coupled with a solid defensive structure, was crucial,” he explained.

The back-to-back shutouts are a sign that Tottenham are developing a cohesive defensive identity. Frank emphasised that it’s about more than keeping the ball out of the net, as it’s a comprehensive approach to defending.

“It’s not only about clean sheets, that’s easier said than done,” he noted. “It’s about high pressure, middle and low blocks, defending the box, and blocking shots. Every aspect matters. If you achieve clean sheets, you’re much closer to winning games.”

For Spurs, the early-season defensive resilience offers a strong platform to build on. Consecutive victories, combined with shutouts at the Etihad and against Burnley, underline a team adapting to a new structure while building confidence and belief in Frank’s system.
