Tim Sherwood: Aston Villa still need to win their final three games to avoid Premier League relegati
Aston Villa manager Tim Sherwood believes his side still need three wins to secure Premier League survival, despite earning a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Everton at Villa Park.
Two goals from Christian Benteke, making it ten in eight games for the Belgian, and Tom Cleverley’s clinical finish made sure of a crucial three points after the Toffees responded twice through Romelu Lukaku’s penalty and Phil Jagielka.
Villa moved up to 14th in the table, but victories elsewhere for their relegation rivals means they are still very much in the mire, and Sherwood has challenged his players to grab three victories from their remaining three games.
“It’s still going to go to the wire. We are going to need three wins to stay in the division,” said the 46-year-old.
“I have no interest in other people’s results. If we win our games we’ll be in the division.”
Sherwood has overseen a dramatic overhaul in fortunes at Villa Park since taking over in February, and he believes his players and the performances are starting to embody the style of play he wants to embed.
“They are buying into what I’m telling them on the playing field, you are actually seeing Tim Sherwood’s side out there,” said the Villa boss.
“I think the scoreline flattered Everton a bit. They were the form team in the league but we took them out of the equation and focused on our own game. We have had that level for three or four weeks.”
